Why Should I Put Bone Broth in My Hot Chocolate?

Fair question. And this is exactly the question my husband asked me the first time I made it. Sure, you don’t HAVE TO, but there are a few reasons that you should at least try it. Bone broth has tons of benefits, and is incredibly nutrient dense. And don’t worry, this recipe doesn’t taste like broth. The bone broth adds depth and richness to the hot chocolate that is simply amazing.

What is Bone Broth?

Bone broth is a nutrient-rich liquid made by simmering animal bones, typically along with vegetables, herbs, and spices, for an extended period. This slow cooking process allows the bones to release various compounds, such as collagen, gelatin, amino acids, and minerals, into the broth. The result is a flavorful and nutrient-dense liquid that has loads of health benefits. Learn how to make your own bone broth.

Bone Broth Benefits:

  1. Rich in Collagen and Gelatin:Collagen is a structural protein found in connective tissues, skin, and bones. As bones simmer, collagen is released into the broth. When the broth cools, it often forms a gelatinous texture, which is a sign of a high collagen content. Collagen supports joint health, skin elasticity, and hair and nail growth.
  2. Amino Acids:Bone broth contains various amino acids, including proline and glycine. These amino acids are important for overall health, contributing to processes like protein synthesis, immune function, and energy production.
  3. Minerals:The simmering process extracts minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, from the bones. These minerals play a crucial role in bone health, nerve function, and other physiological processes.
  4. Digestive Health:The gelatin in bone broth may help soothe and support the digestive system. Gelatin promotes the integrity of the gut lining and assists in the digestion of nutrients.
  5. Immune Support:The amino acids in bone broth, particularly glycine, have been suggested to have immune-supporting properties. A well-functioning immune system is essential for overall health and disease prevention.
