If you are short on time, you could use some precooked bacon from the store but it won’t be as good. You also will end up using some of the bacon grease to cook your onions in, so you don’t want to miss out on all that extra flavor!

What can I use instead of cranberries? ›

There's not a direct substitute for fresh cranberries, but you could make a relish or chutney using a combination of fresh cherries and pomegranates, as well as a small amount of dried cranberries or dried figs. The flavor will be more sweet than tart, but it serves the same purpose.

How to fix a jam that didn't set? ›

If it still hasn't set, it's time to determine how much jam needs to be recooked. You don't want to remake more than 8 cups (4 pints) at a time. For every 4 cups of jam that needs to be remade, whisk together 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon powdered pectin.

What to do if jam doesn't set? ›

Add pectin.

Whisk a tablespoon of powdered pectin (preferably the no-sugar-needed variety) into the pot of cooking jam. Test for thickness and add another tablespoon if needed.

Our list of things we want to use this jam in is ever-growing. Here are just a few to get you started: warm potato salad, grilled asparagus, fresh tomatoes, panzanella, grilled cheese, crackers and goat cheese, spinach salad, a spoon, fresh garden peas, scrambled eggs, bagels and cream cheese...

Do you refrigerate bacon jam after opening? ›

Some bacon jam recipes indicate that the prepared jam is to be refrigerated or frozen. Some give no directions for storage. For safety, we strongly recommend that bacon jam be refrigerated for times suggested by the recipe (2-4 weeks) or that it be frozen for longer storage.

What is uncured bacon jam used for? ›

Can I use craisins instead of cranberries? ›

Yes, Craisins® Sweetened Dried Cranberries work well in baked goods; however, there is a 1/4 cup (60 mL) difference in measurement. If a recipe calls for one cup of fresh cranberries you should use 3/4 cup (175 mL) of Craisins®. Craisins® should not be used in cooked sauces.

What is the closest berry to cranberries? ›

Another Good Substitute: Lingonberries

They are more like a cranberry cousin with the same genus, Vaccinium while redcurrants come from the Ribes family. Because they have a similar flavour to cranberries, they are perfect to substitute in their place in something like cranberry sauce or even a cranberry jam recipe.

What is the difference between 100% cranberry juice and cranberry juice? ›

Cranberry juice is usually labeled "100% juice." Other fruits are sometimes added to balance the tart cranberry taste, but that label indicates that the product is made with 100% fruit juices. Cranberry juice co*cktail, meanwhile, has added sugars or high-fructose corn syrup for extra sweetness.

What if my bacon jam is too runny? ›

The best way to thicken your bacon jam is to allow the liquid to reduce during the cooking time on the stove. Use your spoon or spatula to test the thickness by drawing a line in the jam. If it leaves a distinct trail, it's thick enough. If it does not leave a trail, continue to cook until it does.

What if bacon jam is too watery? ›

If you find the jam too liquid for your taste, transfer to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the liquid has evaporated and the jam is thick and syrupy. Adjust the seasonings and serve warm.

Why is my jam not thickening? ›

Sadly, sugar plays a huge role in set. If you cut the amount in the recipe and you don't compensate with a pectin designed for low sugar preserving, your jam may well be runny.

How do you thicken bacon grease? ›

Add 1/4 cup flour to the hot grease and whisk over medium heat for 2 minutes. Whisk continuously so the flour does not burn. Add 1 cup of milk to the grease/flour mixture and continue to stir with the whisk. Once it starts to thicken, add the second cup of milk and stir.
